A California tax credit was passed as part of the new state budget for buyers of new homes between now and March 1, 2010. It allows them to claim a deduction of up to $10,000 over three successive years on their state income taxes provided the home will be their principal residence for at least two years.

An $8,000 federal tax credit can be used in addition to the state credit, but can be used by first-time buyers only who purchase their home between now and December 1, 2009. (Update: new closings is June 30th, 2010). An Income limit of $75,000 (Update: $125,000) a year for individuals and $150,000 (Update: $225,000) a year for joint filers also applies.

Neither the Federal nor State of California tax credits have to be repaid.

Update: Ten (10) percent of the purchase price of a primary residence, up to a maximum of $8,000 for the first-time home buyers and $6,500 for repeat buyers. First-time buyers are defined as people who have not owned a home in the past three (3) years. Repeat buyers must owned their current home at least five (5) years. The tax credit can not be used for houses costing more than $800,000.
